JieJie (Peng Jie)

Jie is a Chinese painter born in 1977, who has spent his life with paint and canvas. He works at the foot of Wutong Mountain — the highest point in Shenzhen, a city known for moving fast. While everything below accelerates, he has chosen to slow down: to walk the forest, to work where the trees are, to let a year feel like a year.

He paints outdoors — in the forest, on rooftops, in courtyards — and leaves the canvas out for the weather. Sun, rain, wind, insects. What comes back, he did not plan. He works this way on purpose: so the painting might hold the forest's quiet, the rain's slow breath, the energy of the season itself. The canvas, to him, is already half-written by the world; his hand only helps it along.

In the Eastern philosophy he works from, everything is made of five elemental energies — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water — and each of us is born, by our own date and hour, carrying one that is ours. This reading of energy has been passed down for 2000 years. He believes a painting left out in the weather quietly absorbs one of these energies and holds it.
